Malignant lymphomas are characterised by the replacement of large areas of thyroid parenchyma with lymphoma cells (Fig. 16.13). In the majority of cases the lesion is high grade, often immunoblastic, and the prognosis is poor. Most of the low-grade lymphomas are lymphoplasmacytoid. In over fifty per cent of the cases, surviving non-infiltrated parenchyma shows Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
